This is not a printing service. One person's story is read, the brush is taken up once, and the result is made into something wearable. The price covers all of it.
The calligrapher's original brushwork on paper is yours to keep only with the kakejiku option (+$500 / ¥83,000).

Under an exclusive agreement with our calligrapher, the brush is taken up once, for that person. The finished brushstroke is held for your order alone and never reused for another client. A serial-numbered certificate of authenticity is included.

Nothing is picked from a template or a font library. The calligrapher reads your relationship and the story behind it, then decides the words and the writing.

Frequently asked questions
Q.Who is this gift meant for?
Weddings, retirements, milestone birthdays (60th / 70th / 80th), graduations and new beginnings, or heartfelt thank-yous — Sumika is designed as a gift for the people who matter to you, across a wide age range.
Q.How far in advance should I order?
Delivery takes about 3 weeks; adding the hanging scroll extends it to about 5 weeks. For dated occasions such as weddings, we recommend ordering 1–2 months in advance.
Q.Can you rush an order?
Standard delivery is about 3 weeks, or about 5 weeks with the hanging scroll. Depending on the calligrapher's schedule we can sometimes shorten this. Please write to hello@sumika.gift before ordering — we can't promise it, but we'll do what we can.
Q.Can you ship directly to the recipient?
Yes. We ship directly to any address, with noshi wrapping and the calligrapher's letter enclosed. International shipping is available on DDP (delivered duty paid) terms.
Q.Can you include a message card?
Yes, at no charge. Up to 100 characters from you to the recipient, written out by hand if you'd like. It's enclosed alongside the calligrapher's letter.
Q.Who is the calligrapher?
A working professional calligrapher. Given the nature of the work, we do not publish the individual calligrapher's profile.
Q.How is the piece chosen?
The calligrapher reads your message and chooses a piece of one to five characters best suited to the recipient. If you have a specific word in mind, please let us know. The brush is taken up once per order, and that brushstroke is never reused for another client.
Q.Can I choose the word myself?
Yes. There's a "preferred word" field at checkout (1–10 characters). If you leave it blank, the calligrapher chooses one to five characters from what you've told us. Even when you name the word, the style and composition are left to the calligrapher.
Q.Could the same piece be used for another customer?
No. The brush is taken up once per order. The finished brushstroke is held for your order alone and is never reused for another customer's product. Even when two customers ask for the same character, the stroke and composition differ every time.
Q.Does the calligrapher's original paper come with the gift?
Not with the standard set. The calligrapher's original brushwork is scanned at high resolution, made into the wearable piece, and then archived by us. If you want the original itself, choose the kakejiku option — the very paper the brush touched is mounted into the scroll and sent to you.
Q.Are the T-shirt and hanging scroll the same piece?
Yes. The calligrapher writes once, on paper. That single sheet is scanned and printed onto the shirt, and the original is then mounted into the scroll. The piece you wear and the piece you hang come from the same brushstroke.
Q.Can I order more than one with the same calligraphy?
Yes — +$80 (¥13,000) each at checkout. You choose the size for each one, so a matching pair or a set for the family works. Personal orders are limited to 20; beyond that, please use the business form.
Q.Do you take corporate orders?
Yes. Onboarding gifts, anniversaries, distributing company principles — we work with companies from 10 pieces upward, from the consultation about your principles through to delivery. Please see the Sumika for Business page.
Q.What if the recipient doesn't like it?
At checkout you tell us the occasion, your relationship to the recipient, and what you want to say. The piece is made from that, so refunds are not possible once production starts — but we welcome revision requests.
